CIMFR
(Erstwhile CMRI)
Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR),
Dhanbad under the aegis of CISR is currently implementing a S&T
project entitled “Development of tracking and monitoring system
using RFID tags for disaster management in underground mines”,
sponsored by the Department of Information Technology (DIT),
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of
India. Under the project, CIMFR has developed following wireless
technologies: (i) Miners’ tracking system, (ii) Proximity warning
system, (iii) System for preventing vehicle collisions, (iv) Route
tracing system for opencast transport vehicles, (v) System for
providing warning signals when miner entering the unsafe area, (vi)
Underground gas monitoring system, and (v) Message communication
system. The core system component is ZigBee-compliant active Radio
Frequency
IDentification (RFID)
device. The devices can be programmed to act as coordinator (Fig.
1), router/end device (Fig. 2), gas monitoring device (Fig. 3) and
messaging device (Fig. 4). Coordinator, router and end devices form
an IEEE 802.15.4-based dynamic wireless mesh network using the
developed resident hardware specific embedded software (RFID device
program). It uses a unified wireless mesh networking infrastructure
to locate, trace and manage mobile assets and people as well as
monitor different environmental conditions using sensors. The ZigBee
devices have numerous advantages, namely, unlicensed 2.4 GHz
Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band; ultra low power
(ideal for battery operated system, Rx: 27 mA, Tx: 25 mA); large
number of nodes/sensors; reliable and secure links between network
nodes; dynamic network to overcome redundancy problem; easy
deployment and configuration; low cost system; very fast transition
time; and smaller in size (system on chip). An application software
(Wireless sensor network) has been developed for tracking,
monitoring and storing on-line information received from RFID
devices placed at strategic locations of a mine. The developed
technology has been patented and software is copyrighted in India
and abroad.
